Hanjas Hosta
![]() |
Jan Hurup Hansen is the most well-known Danish hosta breeder. In his garden, he grows a wide variety of plants, including peonies, succulents, ferns, and many others. However, his greatest passion is hostas. He has been actively breeding hostas for many years and has named around 40 to 50 beautiful cultivars. With only a few exceptions – such as Hosta Danish Mouse – he names his hostas using the prefix “Hanjas.” Not every hosta enthusiast can claim to have a "Hanjas" cultivar in their collection. These exceptional and beautiful plants are not easy to come by. If you contact Jan Hurup Hansen directly, he may be able to offer you one or two, but there are never enough plants to meet the growing demand for these rare treasures. We’ve been working with Jan for several years and are proud to help share his wonderful hostas with gardeners around the world. That’s why you’ll find some of his cultivars available in our collection. Jan Hurup Hansen pays special attention to leaf shape and color, as well as the overall look of the plant in the garden. His hostas often stand out for their elegant form, subtle color transitions, and compact growth. His work includes cultivars of various sizes – from tiny minis to larger varieties – and his selection features hybrids and forms that are considered true gems by collectors.
