Iris sibirica 'Sultan's Ruby' is an outstanding Siberian iris with its deep magenta standards and velvety falls highlighted by a golden sunburst signal. Introduced by Robert Hollingworth in 1988, this award-winning perennial reaches a height of 70-80 cm and blooms early in the season, typically at the end of May. Its ruffled petals, bold colors, and resilience against pests and diseases make it a standout addition to any garden. The deep magenta blooms, topped with lighter rose-violet style arms, add texture and drama to borders or wild garden settings.
Iris sibirica 'Sultan's Ruby' has earned multiple awards, including the prestigious Morgan-Wood Medal in 1994. This robust iris thrives in well-drained soil and full sun, requiring minimal care, making it a perfect choice for gardeners seeking both beauty and ease.
How to grow Japanese iris
Iris ensata is a full-sun iris growing naturally in open wet fields in eastern Asia. Iris ensata has a vertical growth habit like most other iris species. Its large flowers come in different shades of blue. It needs to be grown in an acid humus-rich soil, with regular watering between early March and the end of July. Iris ensata can be planted in a sunny place in the garden, at the banks of a pond or slow flowing streams, or in wet places that are not flooded during the winter. It may prove necessary to cover the young plants through the first winter (with mulch, straw or bark shavings etc.) especially in the case of late planting.
