Iris ensata Gold Bound, is a timeless classic among iris cultivars, known for its pure white flowers and enduring elegance. Its large, ruffled petals adorned with a hint of lemon yellow create a striking appearance, complemented by tall, gracefully arching grassy foliage that remains attractive throughout the growing season. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, this iris adapts well to various soil types. It blooms from June to August, making it perfect for both cut and dried flower arrangements. Iris ensata Gold Bound is fully hardy, forming clumps with deciduous foliage, reaching a height of 60 - 90 cm and a spread of 45 - 60 cm within 2 to 5 years. Its green, white, and yellow hues make it a versatile companion plant, harmonizing beautifully with Hosta, Hemerocallis, and Geranium in garden landscapes.
How to grow Japanese iris
Iris ensata is a full-sun iris growing naturally in open wet fields in eastern Asia. Iris ensata has a vertical growth habit like most other iris species. Its large flowers come in different shades of blue. It needs to be grown in an acid humus-rich soil, with regular watering between early March and the end of July. Iris ensata can be planted in a sunny place in the garden, at the banks of a pond or slow flowing streams, or in wet places that are not flooded during the winter. It may prove necessary to cover the young plants through the first winter (with mulch, straw or bark shavings etc.) especially in the case of late planting.
