It has been two years since we wrote about our own hosta cultivars in our Blog. Things have moved on a bit since then and we would like to write something about our hostas again.. Breeding is a very interesting and creative activity that we really enjoy here at Eurohosta, but our options of space and time are limited...That is why we devote to this "hobby" rather to a limited extent. Every year we sow hosta seeds and about 5 - 10,000 seedlings sprout. Read in our blog how to grow hostas from seeds. A couple of them are selected and followed for several years. We then select the best ones and propagate them.

The fact that we use prefix "Buffalo" for our well-bred hostas is already known. We also believe that you know we have already registered a few hosta cultivars with the American Hosta Society (AHS):

We have registered the following cultivars so far in AHS (name and a year of registration):

1. Buffalo Amber Waves, 2016
2. Buffalo Bill, 2014
3. Buffalo Black Soup, 2016
4. Buffalo Designer Genes, 2020
5. Buffalo Grassland Berries, 2023
6. Buffalo Grassland Lightning, 2023
7. Buffalo Ice Mouse, 2020
8. Buffalo Misty Fog, 2022
9. Buffalo Misty Mouse, 2023
10. Buffalo Spring Beauty, 2022

What inspired us and what are our visions?

We started breeding hostas in 2014-2015. We already had quite a large number of hostas growing in our garden at that time. Back then we noticed a hosta that was quite different in appearance from other cultivars. It was a Curly Fries hosta from Bob Solberg from the USA. Its "shaggy" restless clump was very different from the other hostas with wide, heart-shaped or oval leaves growing in our garden. Shortly after that we received another very interesting hosta from Patrick Butaye from Belgium. It completely charmed us. It was a hosta named Kempen Weaving Shadow. I assume that was the point when we thought it would be worth breeding a similar hosta. Consequently, we commenced focusing on hostas with narrower leaves, ideally with overhanging leaves. We acquired several other, similar cultivars for our collection and started crossbreeding them with the aim of growing a new, interesting cultivar.

Recognize our hostas by name...

In order for you to know by the name of our hosta whether it is a green, blue or a yellow hosta, we decided to introduce a certain system in the nomenclature of our cultivars. We would like to use the following names for our hostas in the future.

„Buffalo Grassland... “ the name with this prefix is mostly given to green or blue-green hosta cultivars.

We have two cultivars of this series that have been registered so far, and several more will be added soon. Buffalo Grassland Berries have nice upright growth and distinctive red leaf petioles. A nice hosta, especially in a flowerpot, Buffalo Grassland Lightning is an upright growing hosta that forms a "shaggy", restless clump of leaves. The leaves are firm, wavy from the sides. It has nice big light purple flowers, but does not produce seeds. We also have the Buffalo Grassland Salad with green, nicely shaped leaves and upright growth ready for registration. You may be interested in Buffalo Grassland Rain with glossy leaves or Buffalo Grassland Valley with a regular clump of grey-green leaves, nicely wavy at the edge. Hosta Buffalo Grassland Rippling produces a restless clump of green-blue leaves, looks interesting in a flowerpot. By far the most outstanding cultivar of the "Grassland" series is definitely the Buffalo Grassland Fountain cultivar. This unique and exceptional hosta was completely different from the other hostas in the flower bed, from the very first day of sprouting. Dark burgundy leaf petioles have green-blue leaves. They are slightly wavy at the sides and significantly tapered. The very symmetrical shape of gradually overhanging leaves is especially exceptional. We believe that this unusual hosta will interest many hosta lovers.

„Buffalo Golden... “ we really like yellow hostas and would like to give them such names in the future.

From the "Golden" series we have prepared a hosta Buffalo Golden Curls for registration. It has been attracting us with its unusual shape of yellow leaves since the beginning. They are narrow, tapered and pointed down. There are also yellow hostas waiting for the registration, that are still in the observation stage. They still have to definitely convince us of their qualities. The Buffalo Golden Warrior hosta has yet to convince us that it is worth the registration. Furthermore, Buffalo Golden Tiara has been a very vigorous hosta in our offer for a few years now. Our seedling of unknown origin is growing well and is very distinctly yellow in the spring.

„Buffalo Blue... “ this is how we would like to name blue or distinctively green-blue cultivars.

The most distinctive cultivar of this series, Buffalo Blue Lake, we would like to put on sale very soon.

„Buffalo Painted...“ this is how two-color hostas with an edge ought to be called.

From the "Buffalo Painted..." series, we have prepared Buffalo Painted Sky for hosta registration. A small to medium-sized perennial with azure blue leaves and creamy white edges. Very good substance!

Hosta Buffalo Painted Sky

„Buffalo Misty...“ streaked-variegated hostas are still very popular among the growers.

We already have Buffalo Misty Spoon, Buffalo Misty Fog or Buffalo Misty Pathway growing in our garden. Many gardeners were interested in hosta Buffalo Misty Mouse, which belongs to the group of popular "mouse" hostas. All variegated hostas are intended primarily for hostas collectors.

Hosta Buffalo Misty Mouse

„Buffalo Crazy...“ this name was reserved for hostas with an extremely odd shape or unusual color.

Some time ago we found a small hosta among our seedling with yellow leaves and small green spots. We named this hosta Buffalo Crazy Daisy. It is still growing in a pot and we are not counting on its registration yet..

„Buffalo Mountain...“ puckered hostas.

Wrinkled hostas are another group that caught our attention. A hosta with a work name of Buffalo Mountain Sunrise with yellow, wrinkled leaves and a creamy white edge is already growing in our garden and so far it looks like it might be a very, very interesting hosta indeed. Let yourself be surprised then...

Hostas that do not fit into any above mentioned categories would be simply called "Buffalo...".

Among the hostas registered so far, we would like to mention hosta Buffalo Spring Beauty. It belongs to the "Striptease" hosta family. These hostas are very popular among the hosta collectors and growers. Buffalo Spring Beauty is an unpretentious garden perennial that is beautiful throughout spring to fall. It has a nice, light green color in the spring and later in the season it has a distinct white strip in the middle of the leaf. Many admirers have even the small hosta "Mouse" type. They come from Blue Mouse Ears hosta. They are small, do not require that much space and that is why they are suitable for the balcony, on a shelf in the garden or just on the edge of a flower garden. We have contributed to this society of small perennials with the cultivar Buffalo Ice Mouse. It will be for sale at the end of 2023 or in the spring of 2024.

Follow our website. We shall inform you about our new plants also in the future...
